Volunteerism, Personal Growth and Professional Development
Did you know that ASTD Golden Gate is an all volunteer organization?  That’s right, everything that happens at the chapter happens because someone volunteered to do it! Are you now wondering why anyone - in his or her right mind - would volunteer to add more onto an already overly full plate?

Believe me, in my five years of service to the chapter, I have asked myself that question several times. The answer, for me, is simple – personal growth and professional development. A volunteer role, in any capacity, offers opportunities to: network with other members in a more regular and targeted way, develop and practice leadership skills and broaden horizons.

Five years ago I took a role on the Board of Directors as Vice President of Membership; I did this because the chapter needed help and because I had the time. I had just been severed from my long time job and I needed
something to do and I needed to build my network. Needless to say, I haven’t left.

Here I am, looking back five years later, after three stints in Membership and two in Professional Development, amazed at what I’ve learned over that period of time. I am so much better at networking now; I feel confident
in pretty much any networking situation. When I began I felt awkward walking into the event, not knowing anyone and having to speak. I’ve maintained my management skills even when I have had jobs where I was
not a manager and I’ve broadened my professional network. But more than that, I have broadened my mind because of the different people I’ve come into contact with and the different perspectives each brings to a situation.

Suffice it to say, serving the Golden Gate Chapter had been a rewarding experience for me. If you are interested in developing personally and professionally, consider volunteering to assist on a committee, serve on
the Board of Directors, work for the Community Outreach Program or volunteer to run a Special Interest Group. You may well be surprised at what you gain from the experience.
