COP Helps Camp Edventure More! Write Its Own Training
The Community Outreach Program typically does the work itself to design and develop training programs for Bay Area nonprofits. But what happens when the nonprofit profit doesn’t quite fit the typical COP model? What if the nonprofit has a lot of procedures, and the amount of instructional development is outside COP’s scope? COP came up with a solution – COP taught the nonprofit how to do it themselves. DYO – “Do Your Own.”
That’s what happened with Camp Edventure More!, the summertime arts and sciences camp for kids. Every year, EdMo had the same challenge – to teach their incoming camp directors all of their policies and procedures. Even returning camp directors, counselors, and instructors needed refreshers and updates. The entire crew had to get back into the EdMo culture with morning rallies, transitions between sessions, daily “At-A-Glance” notes, and Team Time.
COP volunteers, Kris Schaeffer and Stella Wong, taught them how to do it on their own. Kris and Stella met with their chief subject matter expert (SME) who had all the knowledge. The challenge was to impart all that know-how to the camp leaders.
Kris, Stella, and the EdMo team had a series of four in-service meetings. First, they defined all the tasks. Then they determined the priorities. Some tasks needed job aids. Some tasks needed a further task analysis and specific procedures. Some tasks needed skills-based training. Kris and Stella taught them how to do it all so that the Edventure More camps would live up to their culture – professional, fun, caring, and safe.
Sharon Mor, the Executive Director, said, "Working with the COP team was a joy. They took the time to understand our organization and customized a solution for our unique needs. At first, we were expecting them to just create and deliver a training course. But instead, they provided us with the tools and the knowledge we needed to design our own program and make us self sufficient. The skills we gained from our COP experience will be used for internal staff development for many years to come. Thank you COP!"
